Paris, September – UIC is proud to announce that Eurostar has officially signed the UIC Climate Responsibility Pledge, joining a growing number of railway operators committed to accelerating climate action and supporting the decarbonisation of the transport sector.

By signing the pledge, Eurostar reaffirms its dedication to the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UIC Railway Climate Declaration, which calls on the global rail community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote modal shift to rail as a low-carbon transport solution.

Eurostar has already made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint. With its electric-powered fleet and carbon-efficient operations, Eurostar is well-positioned to lead by example in delivering climate-smart mobility across Europe. As part of its sustainability strategy, Eurostar has committed to becoming net zero by 2050, with interim targets to reduce carbon emissions per passenger kilometre by 30% by 2030. The company is also investing in energy-efficient rolling stock and renewable electricity sourcing. In addition, Eurostar is working to eliminate single-use plastics, improve waste management and promote eco-conscious travel behaviour among its passengers.

The UIC Climate Responsibility Pledge is part of the organisation’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes the Rail Sustainability Index (RSI), support for climate adaptation and engagement in international climate forums, such as COP.

UIC encourages all members to join the pledge and contribute to a shared vision of a resilient, inclusive and decarbonised transport future.
