Across the globe, regardless of country or culture, the rail industry faces common challenges at level crossings and along railway tracks.

The vast majority of collisions occur because individuals take deliberate risks or make poor decisions, often due to distraction, habit, or simple oversight.

To address these dangers, risk assessments, as well technical solutions and innovation are used to improve the most dangerous level crossings.

Alongside these measures, education and awareness initiatives play a crucial role in promoting safe behaviour and, if necessary, enforcement measures may also be taken to counter inappropriate conduct near tracks and crossings.

By raising awareness, educating the public, and working in collaboration with various sectors, ILCAD and TRESPAD are striving to reduce the number of incidents and save lives.
This year, particular emphasis is being placed on the theme: “Helping people make good decisions”.

As part of the 4th edition of the TRESPAD campaign, UIC has released a compelling awareness video featuring CCTV footage from various countries around the globe, capturing real instances of railway trespassing. The message is both clear and urgent: “Unsafe behaviours around the railway cost lives. Stay off the tracks”.

The TRESPAD campaign aims to inspire individuals to make “safe choices – every time” by highlighting the serious dangers associated with trespassing on railway property.

To further support this initiative, UIC has also developed a series of posters designed to promote safe behaviour in and around railway tracks. These educational tools are intended to support outreach efforts worldwide, reinforcing the critical importance of respecting railway infrastructure to ensure safety for all.
