On 10 June 2025, the UIC Commuter and Regional Train Services (CRTS) group will host an online workshop titled “Management of commuter and regional railway systems during big events”, running from 10:00 to 12:30 CET. This event aims to address the unique challenges and opportunities that large-scale events pose to commuter and regional rail systems.

Major events such as international sports tournaments, festivals, and conferences can have a substantial impact on commuter and regional rail services. These events often lead to increased passenger volumes, heightened security requirements, and consequently a need for precise logistical coordination. The workshop will therefore explore strategies to enhance operational readiness, customer satisfaction, and sustainability in commuter rail services during such critical periods.

The workshop will commence with opening remarks introducing UIC CRTS activities and outlining the agenda. A keynote speech by Thomas Perrot, Senior Manager at UEFA, will provide an insight into managing transport during major sporting events.

Following this, case studies from France, Italy, and Hungary will be presented, highlighting successful strategies in handling large passenger flows and operational challenges during major events. A panel discussion will then go into detail on the strategic management of railway services for large-scale events, featuring railway operators and urban mobility experts. Topics will include operational challenges, coordination with event organisers and authorities, how to improve the customer experience, service adaptations, and lessons learned.

The workshop will conclude with a summary of key takeaways and future opportunities for taking part.
