Introduction
In collaboration with Ricardo plc, UIC is developing a new set of guidelines: IRS 30345 – Environmental specifications for new rolling stock, to support the integration of environmental requirements into the procurement process for new rolling stock.
This new International Railway Solution (IRS) will replace UIC Leaflet 345 and aims to provide harmonised, practical, and up-to-date environmental specifications for stakeholders involved in rolling stock procurement. IRS 30345 focuses on four key environmental domains:
- Energy and CO₂ emissions (during operation)
- Noise and vibrations (external)
- Air quality (external exhaust and non-exhaust emissions to the environment)
- Material use and circularity (during production and operation)
Purpose of the questionnaire
This benchmark study aims to gather insights into current practices, requirements, and goals across the railway sector. This includes both technical specifications and award criteria used in tenders to promote sustainability and circularity in the procurement of new rolling stock.
By sharing your experience, you will contribute to the development of a widely supported and applicable IRS. Your input will help ensure that IRS 30345 reflects best practices, encourages innovation, and aligns with the sector’s evolving environmental goals.
All individual responses will be treated confidentially and will not be published. Only aggregated findings and general conclusions will be used in the final report.
Who should participate?
This questionnaire is intended for stakeholders involved in sustainability specifications, sustainable procurement, design, manufacturing, and operation of rolling stock, including but not limited to:
- Railway undetakings (passenger and freight)
- Rolling stock manufacturers and suppliers
- Rolling stock lessors and buyers
- Concession providers
- Consultants and engineers involved in procurement
- Environmental and sustainability experts in the rail sector
Important: This questionnaire is not intended for infrastructure managers.
