Madrid, 28 June 2022. The Spanish Railway Foundation has called for entries to the 31st edition of the ‘Caminos de Hierro’ photo contest to be submitted by 31 October 2022. This initiative aims to encourage photographic creativity using the railway as the central figure through the lens of its passengers, stations, trains, tracks, tunnels, metros and the railway universe in general.

The competition has become one of the most prestigious contests at national and international level, and is highly valued by professionals and amateurs in the photography world, as proven by the constant increase in participation.

The contest is aimed at both national and international professional and amateur photographers. The prize money totals over €8,000, with €4,000 awarded for first prize, €2,000 for second, €1,200 for best young photographer (contestants aged 25 in 2022 or younger may compete), and four honourable mentions of €300 each.

Photographs must be submitted in digital format and exclusively via the form available on the website: www.caminosdehierro.es (jpg, maximum 1.5 MB). Regarding photographic series, these must comprise three, four or five photographs, all contained in a single file.

The final selection will comprise 70 photographs, to be published in a catalogue and exhibited in spaces defined by the Foundation.

The Jury’s decision, the awards ceremony and the opening of the first exhibition of the awarded and selected photographs will take place in February 2023. This exhibition will then tour Spain, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy it at several Spanish stations. This journey is made in collaboration with Adif (railway infrastructure manager).

This Spanish Railway Foundation initiative is based on the quality of the works, the value of the prizes, the huge number of visitors to the exhibitions in station halls and the impact in the media, and its popularity and success have grown in pace with the artistic value of photography in Spain.

Since its inception, nearly 37,000 photographers have participated, coming not only from Spain, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy and other European countries but also from Africa, America and Asia, and more than 80,000 photographs have been submitted.

Those interested can visit the contest website to consult the complete rules, submit photographs in digital format and get detailed information on ‘Caminos de Hierro’. All the winning photographs from the previous 30 editions are also available to view.

The Spanish Railway Foundation has both Twitter and Instagram profiles to promote its dissemination via social media:
